Definition

A transparent plastic strip with precisely printed markings that the printer uses to determine the exact position of the carriage as it moves across the platen.

In-Depth Explanation

The encoder strip works with an optical sensor on the carriage to provide position feedback. If the strip becomes dirty, scratched, or damaged, the printer cannot accurately position the printheads, leading to misaligned prints or error code 23:10. Cleaning the encoder strip with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water is a common maintenance procedure. The strip should never be touched with bare fingers as oils can cause reading errors.
