The printer has detected a critical issue with the carriage assembly, which holds and moves the printheads. This error prevents the carriage from moving correctly and thus stops all printing operations.
- 1
Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- 2
Open the top cover and carefully inspect the carriage path. Look for any obstructions, paper jams, or debris that might be blocking the carriage.
- 3
Manually try to move the carriage from left to right. It should move smoothly without excessive force.
- 4
Check the carriage belt for any signs of fraying, looseness, or damage.
- 5
Reconnect power and restart the printer.
Model-Specific Notes: • T-Series (e.g., T1530, T3500): Check the carriage belt tension. It should be firm but not overly tight. Inspect the carriage bushings for wear. • Z-Series (e.g., Z6200, Z6800): These models have heavy-duty carriages. Look for signs of lubrication issues on the carriage rod. • Legacy models (e.g., 1050c): The carriage rod can accumulate dirt and old lubricant, causing friction. Clean and re-lubricate with HP-approved grease. Expert Insight: When manually moving the carriage, feel for any rough spots or binding. If the carriage is stiff, clean the metal carriage rod with a lint-free cloth and apply a very thin layer of HP-approved silicone-based grease (e.g., HP part number Q6651-60076 or similar). Do NOT use oil or WD-40. Inspect the carriage belt for any missing teeth or fraying; a damaged belt needs replacement. A failing carriage motor or its associated electronics on the main PCA could also be the cause, requiring further diagnostics.

The component that deposits ink onto the media. DesignJet printers use thermal inkjet printheads that fire tiny droplets of ink through microscopic nozzles.
The mechanism that moves the printheads back and forth across the media during printing. It rides on a guide rail and is driven by the scan-axis motor via a belt.
The built-in blade mechanism that automatically cuts media after each print job or at specified intervals.
A calibration process that ensures all printheads are precisely aligned relative to each other for accurate color registration and sharp output.
When the printhead physically contacts the media surface during printing, potentially damaging both the print and the printhead.
A print mode where the printhead deposits ink in both directions of travel (left-to-right and right-to-left), doubling print speed compared to uni-directional printing.
