HP Designjet 500 & 800 Error 86:01 AFTER Belt Replacement
Troubleshoot error 86:01 on your DJ 500/800 after replacing the carriage belt. Here are the most common causes of error 86:01 ...
Scan axis servo shutdown, possible paper jam
- 1
Check for visable obstacles restricting carriage, Turn off/on. Perform scan-axis diagnotic, check carriage belt repalce as needed, lubricate scan axix, perform encoder strip verification
Model-Specific Troubleshooting: • T-Series (T730/T830/T1600): Carriage belt tension is critical - these models use a spring-loaded tensioner that can weaken over time. Check for ~2-3mm deflection when pressing the belt mid-span. • Z-Series (Z6/Z9+): The encoder strip (clear plastic strip behind the carriage) accumulates ink mist faster on photo-quality models. Clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth - never touch with bare hands (oils cause smudging). • PageWide XL: 86:01 on PageWide is almost always the linear encoder sensor, not mechanical. Check the sensor cable connection at the carriage PCA first before ordering parts. • Legacy Models (T1100/T1200/T2300): These older models have a known issue with carriage motor bearing wear. If you hear grinding during carriage movement, the motor assembly needs replacement, not just the belt. Pro Tip: After any carriage repair, run the "Carriage Stall Force Test" from the service menu (hold down and up arrows during power-on). This calibrates the carriage motor current and prevents premature belt wear. Most techs skip this step and see repeat failures within 6 months.
